Suunto t6c OK, but…
I purchased my t6c in October/November 2009. It worked perfectly! Until about the first week in February 2010, when it started indicating that my HR (heart rate) was 260+, when in fact it was in low 60’s. Since then, I’ve found that the readouts on the watch may show my HR at 38 without variation (unusual), then spike to 260+ for a minute or two, or then may register “—” (although, the heart beat icon shows it is detecting the beat). It seems that, after about 10 minutes, it settles down and indicates correctly. At this time, I do not feel that I can rely upon the watch for displaying my correct HR.
After downloading the file to the Suunto “Training Manager” software, I notice that the extremely high HR is not recorded (although it did show up in today’s report, but not in the HR-graph); but, the extremely low HR is recorded and may have a duration of 1 – 7 minutes. I’ve read on forums that others have experienced similar behavior, which continues even after Suunto replaced the chest band and/or the HR transmitter.
If I were buying a high-end HRM today, I would, probably, look at the Polar RS800CX–that’s what I plan to purchase for my daughter–it even counts # of steps/minute, which the Suunto t6c does not do.
I wanted GPS; not “pretty” enough for gals
I bought this product along with competing models from Garmin, Polar, and Timex. I wanted to check ‘em all out, and I went back and forth considering the pros and cons of each. In the end, I went with the Garmin, and very happy I did. Look for my review there (click on my name to see my other reviews).
From the reviews, it seems like Suunto is great for our military folks abroad, and if that’s you, thank you for what you’re doing, and you can stop reading, because this review is more for the civilian fitness/outdoors folks.
It’s pretty clear that Suunto wasn’t designed with a unisex aesthetic. That’s okay, but without stand-out features, it was already low on the comparison chart for me. It’s just large and chunky, and didn’t fit on my small wrist without flopping around.
But what killed the deal for me was the GPS unit. I decided I really need GPS for tracking where I’ve been and how far I’ve gone. I thought this model had a GPS option, but I was mistaken. Turns out that costs quite a few more bucks to get into GPS, as another reviewer noted. I should have paid more attention.
Even if I did get the GPS unit, I will note that the Garmin model seemed superior for GPS applications, at least for casual fitness as opposed to military-your-life-depends-on-it uses, because of:
- the hardware: other brands’ GPS is achieved through a separate unit strapped to your arm that contains three AAA batteries that run out of juice after 8-12 hours. It’s a battery hog. The door of the little plastic GPS thing might be ill-fitting, as it was on mine (from a Timex model, but they all use the same third-party supplier) and another reviewers. So, hit or miss on the manufacturing. Problem is that unloading and reloading the batteries every few runs will get to be a hassle. And, it’s one more piece to lose or break. The Garmin unit contains it all right inside the watch itself. So superior.
- the software: If you’re interested in downlaoding (uploading) your workouts into your PC and analyzing your total miles, calories, and actually seeing your route overlaid on a map, it will require a lot of steps for you and a little PC savvy to do it with other solutions. Garmin is a mapping company and their software is so easy.
But, if you like a manly-looking watch, you don’t need GPS, and this model would probably be great.
Great training watch
I have used the system for 4 weeks by now and the watch is really great for training. The watch has a good strap that is solid and with a good grip. The watch is overall a good watch with clear reading of the display. The information presented is OK.
The revised heartrate monitor is a significant improvement over the old one. The old would would not reliably provide heart rate information, those problem are all gone with the new model.
The watch provides a lot of information and the interface to the PC is awesome. I am much happier with this system compared to the T3 I had before.
The alarm on the watch is not easily accessible and also not very loud, so the watch has some weaknesses as a general utility.
perfect training aide
The perfect information about your training status.I like the automatically adapted activity level most. It indicates very clearly whether you follow your training schedule or not.
Very reproducible foot pod numbers!! The measurement is +- 2% correct – incredible!

This Machine ROCKS!
I’ve been dealing with some neck issues for some time now, and my physical therapist recommended traction. I tried it and after the second or third treatment I was pretty well hooked on it as a way to make my neck feel better without drugs. The problem was I could only see the PT once or twice per week. He recommended this and although somewhat skeptical of the cost, it is worth every penny! Knowing what I know now, I would probably have spent $200 – $300 more for it – small cost when you weigh cost of lost work, cost of PT/physicians’ visits, and tons of OTC pain killers! If you have neck issues, obviously talk to a doc and/or PT first, but if they think you can benefit from home traction, this is the unit to buy! Your insurance may even cover it – mine did after a bit of wangling.
Amazing Pain Relief
Have had this unit for over a year. I got it after doing physical therapy to help do therapy from home. When I use it regularly it keeps my headaches away. Love this product. Thanks to the inventor!
Good redesign – could be better
We borrowed the old style HomeTrac Delux for several weeks before deciding to buy one. The new style is a better and more comfortable design in many ways. Both work very well for stretching the neck and helping the muscles to release.
The one thing I dislike about the new model is the head strap is at a fixed angle that does not lay flat on our foreheads. Even though the strap is wider than on the old model less of it actually touches the forehead and is less comfortable because of the angle. The unit would have gotten five stars if it didn’t have this issue.
Worked for me
I bought this item after a chiropractor/friend and a trainer/manager at my gym recommended it. I had a herniated disc in my neck that bothered me for over9 mo’s. I had done p.t. traction with NO result, had 2 spinal epidurals which alleviated my symptoms (buzzing numbness and discomfort in my arm) about 80%. Then, 2 mo’s after my second epidural my symptoms started creeping back, which really bothered me. I bought the Saunders (for less than $400) even though traction hadn’t done anything for me. I used it 6-8 times over three weeks with no relief, gradually upping the tension. Then, my symptoms disappeared completely and have not returned. I’m working out, basketball, writing on the top of the whiteboard at work, and skateboarding in a pool. If you are thinking about buying, I’d do it!
I feel better than I have in years, thanks to this device
After using the Saunders Home Traction Deluxe for only three weeks, my neck is much better! I have no radiating pain going down my right shoulder anymore and I can feel my right thumb, which had been numb for six weeks. I herniated my cervical disc(5/6)in May, and after am MRI confirmed it, I had to make many decisions as to treatment plans. I am also going to a Chiropractor (SF Chiropractic)and he has a cervical decompression device at his office but this device is perfect for home and it is compact enough for when I travel. Welch Allyn thermometer
My health condition requires frequent monitoring of my temperature. The inexpensive thermometers were inconsistent and replacement batteries were hard to find. The Sure Temp Plus 690 costs more, but is very accurate, easy to use and AA batteries can be purchased anywhere. I feel confident in the readings. A back lit display would be nice, but is not essential. It probably would run down the batteries faster. I would recommend the item to anyone needing fast and accurate temp readings.

The thermometer is really good once you get it working. I was not very happy that I bought it “Brand New” and when I tried to use it, didn’t work. I had to ship the Thermometer Probe back, then waited for a week, then tried again and still wasn’t working, so I ended having to ship back the Thermometer with all accesories. It took a few weeks to get it back and working.
Welch Allyn however, were very good at keeping the guaranty and sending back to me the thermometer after it was fixed.

I am tracking my temperature every morning and need a thermometer with a screen that is easy to read. This one is great. Bought two others cheaper ones that broke in use quickly. Really does take my temperature in 4 seconds.

Drive Knee Walker is a Winner
I was surprised to find how well made and functionally excellent the Drive Knee Walker is, despite a very competitive price. After removing the contents from the box some simple assembly is required. No tools are necessary and the instructions are good. It only involves inserting the handle and wheel tubes into matting tubes. Push button pins lock the handle and wheels in position. The walker legs and handle tubes have adjustment holes for a custom fit. The cushioned platform is nicely made and comfortable. The brake works well and requires no adjustment. The unit folds for easy transport by automobile. I did comparison shopping prior to this purchase and found the price to be an order of magnitude less than competitive units. Also, the design and adjustment features are better than other units I considered. The Drive Knee Walker by Medical Design & Manufacturing is an outstanding value.
EXCELLENT
The Knee Walker is a life-saver!!! This is so much safer than crutches!!! I had surgery on my foot on 12/29/09 and will need to use it for 3 months and I can’t imagine not having it!!! I fell 3 times with crutches which I used until this arrived. For $165.00 this is the best one out there, the other ones are so much more expensive and I don’t think unless you are really frail that using one that turns is that big of a deal. My Orthopaedic doctor was so impressed that he ordered several to have at his practice for people. I can’t say enough good things about this product!!!
good and stable- great crutch replacement
Bought one of these after my boyfriend broke his ankle. Read the reviews and this one was rated as the most stable.
It’s a great product. What it lacks in turning radius it makes up for in stability and being able to be used outside the house. Here in Minnesota at this time of year we have to deal with snow, ice, salt and sand. This one handles it without missing a beat. I view the fixed wheels as a plus: the unit does not “wander off”, and having to pick up the front to turn gives him some exercise (not much because it is pretty light.)
Being off the crutches/walker makes getting around much easier and safer, and helps to keep muscle tone in the broken leg.
The price is cheaper than renting it for the period of time he will be non weightbearing. I picked up a decent bicycle basket for the front and now he’s ready for anything!
Mobility
You need arm strength to pick up and turn, and needs corrections when going straight. You also have a wide turning radius. But this walker frees your arms to handle daily tasks.

This knee walker is great on a straight path. I would recommend spending more and get one where the wheels on the front rotate to assist around corners. However, this device worked better than a normal walker or crutches, and much safer.

Full of features
This is a very reliable HRM, full of technology, easy to use. Don`t relay on the backlight if you are running with very low daylight or at night, for the most, this is very good training parntner. I`m sure that using it with the right POD`s you will be pleasant of the feature that give you at a glance. Right size also, not to big, not to small. Very clear data on tne face and other advantage is that give you 3 rows of instant information, the way you prefer to see it (have differents options on this). Train smart, thupms up for Suunto T6c.
Review by aggressive Indoor Rower, Stationary Cyclist & Weight Trainer new to HR monitoring
I bought this watch/computer two months ago because it seemed to have the best feature set and the most manageable problems (specifically, the HRM belt problems that a few reviewers report below, which strike me as more manageable than watch problems like long turnarounds on battery replacement or damaged “crystals” reported on cheaper Suuntos with plastic “crystals”). Further, it seemed the best looking by far, and it was made in Finland, so I didn’t feel guilty (like I was racing the US to the bottom.)
Let’s get the bad right out of the way:
Download the latest software update from Suunto. I am running a fully updated version of WinXP SP3, and the software with which the watch came brought the BSoD with it. Moreover, I had to completely uninstall/reinstall MS Office because Outlook was permanently damaged. The newest software update, which is available for download at the Suunto website, installed properly (and works flawlessly).
The altimeter function seems worse than useless indoors because it’s never right, and I’m not sure that the “Training Manager” software doesn’t factor it into calculations. At least it, like many of the records, can be turned off.
The temperature record is also useless if the watch is worn against my skin: it doesn’t give ambient temperature but something like my skin temp. Having gleaned that ambient temperature has a substantive impact on my performance, and because I would like to learn more about it, I am disappointed that the function is basically useless.
Sometimes the watch does not seem to correctly calculate calories &/or HR! This is extremely annoying while working out, but the calorie glitch seems to be in the watch. The data record is unaffected by it, and the “Training Manager” software seems glitch free. On the other hand, I once (in a couple dozen workouts) questioned its HR calculations because they were entirely too low. When measured by count, my suspicion seemed to be confirmed: my observed HR over a short (15 sec) count was approximately thirty BPM higher than that indicated by the watch. Granted, it was a short count, but even a short count had never been so discrepant. It seems possible that I experienced the problem because I did not wet the contacts on the HR belt before I started on that occasion or because I hadn’t cleaned the contacts in several workouts. I shall be sure to do both from now on.
The “Training Manager” software doesn’t let me tell it how many breaths I take per minute. I must think that this is important to calculation of oxygen consumption.
And, finally, how one might actually use the “Suunto Monitor” software (not to be confused with the “Training Manager” software) is not immediately obvious (from a purely technical standpoint). Relevant instructions may be someplace in the manual, but I rather expect that software shouldn’t require instructions for basic use.
On to the good stuff, which is really very good.
The watch itself looks almost cool. It’s something that I actually wear with a t-shirt and board shorts. And, it’s easy to set up. Further, it allows me to enter data like observed maximum HR and, in the “Training Manager”, resting HR.
Use of watch and “Training Manager” software are intuitive and/or well labeled. After a couple of uses, I felt myself expert navigating and programming the watch features and “Training Manager”.
The programmable display is very nearly perfect. The HR number can be made quite large on the middle line so that it’s easy to read from even four or five feet away. (For the first month, before I finally upgraded to the PM4, I would strap it to a 1.25″ diameter dowel that I had velcroed to my PM2+ computer arm.) And, with the second “Display” face (in addition to a “Time” face) the information that I want while working out is never further than two clicks of the same button.
When it is on my wrist, I have not had to “lock” it because the buttons are not accidentally depressed.
The HR monitor belt stays put quite well throughout a workout, and it’s comfortable. I don’t even think about it. (Though, it must be worn fairly snugly. In my first weight training session, before I tightened it up, the HRM strap broke contact once for a literal moment while stretching between exercises, at which point I could feel the contacts really slide over my skin. On the plus side again, the reading came back on immediately without prompting when the contacts stopped sliding, and the data record was otherwise uninterrupted).
The HR monitoring capabilities seem (95+% of the time) to be right on. And, the “Training Manager” software provides a lot of good basic data that I’ve been able to incorporate into my training. Further, this data can be migrated to Excel, which I use to analyze all my rowing data. That said, this watch is (according to other reviewers below and online) compatible with very highly rated third-party training software of which I intend to avail myself.
Curiously, both Suunto watch and software calculate kcals burned per minute at a much lower rate than either Concept2 computer while I’m working at lower HR and at a much higher rate than either Concept2 computer at 80-95% of Max HR. (Note that the Suunto calculations agree much more closely with online calculators that take HR, sex, weight and age into account.) I don’t know that either is more accurate, but the differences are significant, relevant and intriguing.
As for the “Training Effect” (TE), it seems a little gimmicky and clearly designed for shorter rows and other workouts. After a hard hour on the erg, it’s invariably over the 5.0 threshold. Sometimes I get there by 45 min.! EPOC seems a much more useful gauge.
In sum, I am very happy with my purchase. For a mineral crystal, ease of use and comfort, 95+% accurate performance, good basic training software, expandable functionality (via third-party software), keen insight and good looks made in Finland it seems well worth the price for which it sells through MrWatch.
A note about MrWatch, from purchase to receipt, the service I received from MrWatch was top notch, and I highly recommend this vendor.
Suunto t6c
The Suunto t6c Heart Rate Monitor is a great watch and fitness trainer. Setup takes a little getting use to (reading the manual helps), but once you learn the technique, it’s quite easy to use. I like the style of the watch. Unlike previous Suunto watches this has a smaller face and wears great with dress shirts and can be worn everyday. The heart rate monitor works well. I like the capability of being able to designate various training settings in two displays. I especially like the Training Effect measurement, which provides a better measurement of your training session than just heart rate alone. The only complaint that I have about the watch is that you cannot download your training measurements to Mac computer. The training software that is supplied with the watch only works on PC’s. Overall, the Suunto t6c Heart Rate Monitor is a stylish watch/monitor and works very well.
T6c poor quality
I owned the T3 watch for 3 years and was impressed with its functionality and durability. I wanted some new features so I bought the T6c from Outdoors Gear via Amazon in October. I have used it 2-3 times a week for nearly three months and suddenly I’m having a lot of problems with getting it to pair properly with the heart rate strap. It will be working fine when I leave the house and then in the middle of my run, it goes blank and no longer reads the heart data. I have followed instructions on “re-pairing” but with poor results. I called their service center and they are all busy and rushed. I find the product concept good but it looks like SUUNTO is taking short cuts on quality parts and quality control in their factory. A $500 heart rate monitor watch that breaks after 3 months is cause for concern. I’m stuck with it now and have to follow the SUUNTO ‘busy’ service plan to eventually get my watch back which is a HUGE hassle considering the product price and reputation of the company. Be careful, it looks like SUUNTO is getting sloppy!
Suunto T6c
The bad …. the first one of these didn’t work properly. It was DOA and then went through two batteries in a week. That said, the guys at [...] were really helpful and sent me a new one very promptly. Buyers should be aware that Suunto quality control is not always perfect and I had a very similar problem with their Smart Belt a couple of years ago, although they replaced that under warranty.
The good … it’s a big improvement on the old T6. The ability to customize the screens is very useful and it’s also compatible with any pods you may have if you’re upgrading either from the T6 or any of the other T-series watches
